She Codes - Women in Tech

Get to know our colleagues Lisa, Nino, Katrin and Emma from the software development and DevOps departments.

Woman IT
Having diverse teams in the IT industry not only creates more effective solutions, but also a broader understanding of the variety of user needs. This blog post celebrates the achievements and impact of women in tech, from the early work of the first female programmer to the talented women driving technology innovation today.

From Lovelace to the present day

As early as the 19th century, women like Ada Lovelace made important contributions to computer technology. Often regarded as the first female programmer, Lovelace saw the potential of a machine that could do more than just calculate. In 1843, she developed an algorithm for Charles Babbage's analytical machine, an early milestone in the history of programming.

Following in the footsteps of Ada Lovelace, women at makandra are shaping the future of technology today. They work in software development and DevOps, demonstrating the importance of a team that values diversity. This mix promotes creative solutions and is crucial for success in the technology industry.

Get to know our IT specialists

We are proud to have talented women like Lisa, Katrin, Emma and Nino in our IT team. Each of them plays an important role in our company and brings innovative ideas and solutions forward every day. Get to know them better below.

Web developer Lisa

Lisa Kreis

Lisa enjoyed working with computers as a child and later discovered her ability to solve logical problems, which led her to programming. In the IT sector, she can develop new solutions and improve products.

During her bachelor's degree at the University of Augsburg, Lisa was asked to work with a company to solve real-world problems as part of a software project. And as fate would have it, makandra got to be that company. Convinced by our open, modern culture and our strong team spirit, Lisa applied for a job with us.

Now Lisa supports our developers as a working student in their daily work. She implements various tasks on changing projects. What she enjoys most is the variety. Due to the variety of tasks, she comes into contact with many different colleagues, areas of responsibility and both older applications and modern technologies. This gives her the chance to keep learning new things and improve her existing skills.

Web developer Katrin

With her high school diploma fresh in her pocket and no clear career plan, Katrin decided to study computer science, encouraged by the positive experiences she had already had with this subject at school. What started out as a random choice soon turned out to be a real vocation.

Similar to Lisa, Katrin had a module during her studies at the University of Augsburg in which she had to develop an application for a customer, namely makandra.

After her studies, she applied to us as a trainee and has now been part of the team for three years. Her main tasks are the implementation of customer projects, including developing new features, fixing bugs and optimizations as well as customer meetings and code reviews. She particularly enjoys developing new features, as this gives her the opportunity to create something new.

DevOps Emma

Emma_Circle

Emma has been interested in computers since elementary school. Her first computer was a Schneider Euro-PC with an 8086 CPU, yellow and black screen and MS DOS 3.3, which she still remembers today. Like many technology enthusiasts, she often took over the maintenance of computers in her neighborhood and at relatives' homes. She also offered various IT services as a managed service provider (MSP) during her time at school and university and worked independently.

Emma has now been working at makandra for almost eight years. She particularly enjoys working with free software such as Linux and developing innovative solutions. Emma got to know us at the Linux-Infotag at Augsburg University of Applied Sciences, where she listened to lectures on virtualization, config management and monitoring - areas that are now part of her main tasks. Her diverse activities include, above all, dealing with security issues. Her expertise in this area led to her appointment as Information Security Officer, where she plays a key role in shaping the company's security strategies.

DevOps Nino

Nino has had a passion for IT ever since she was a child. Even while she was still at school, she knew that she would study computer engineering. The technology sector fascinates her with its dynamism and constant innovations, which always offer something new to discover. This curiosity motivated her to become an active part of this industry herself.

She first became interested in makandra during a Linux-Infotag, similar to her colleague Emma, but a few years later. For Nino, it is particularly important that companies have a strong focus on Linux and open source software - a strength that makandra excels at.

In her current position as a DevOps Trainee, Nino is working with the DevOps curriculum and learning the essential skills for working in the DevOps team. This aspect of her work is the most exciting for her: she gets behind-the-scenes insights and discovers many fascinating technical details.

On the way to a rising number of women in IT

In 2024, there was a significant increase in the proportion of women in IT, both in Germany and internationally. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), women make up around 17% of IT specialists in Germany, while globally the proportion has risen to 26%. At makandra, a third of the entire team is female. However, the proportion of female developers is lower than that of employees in the back office, marketing or HR, as is unfortunately often the case in the tech industry. We hope that we will be able to follow the international trend in the coming years, that more young female IT talent will join the ranks and that it will become easier to fill teams with diverse members.

Our contribution is to create a working environment that values diversity and supports the full development of each individual. Initiatives to increase the proportion of women in technical and leadership positions continue to be seen as crucial to making the industry more inclusive and successful.
