Berlin bewegt sich is a digital platform that lists free exercise opportunities in all of Berlin's districts. makandra did the platform's relaunch and modernized the existing design – including updated features such as the exercise map and calendar.
Berlin bewegt sich was developed on behalf of the State of Berlin to digitize health promotion and prevention efforts. The project’s goal is to promote and transparently organize physical activity programs in Berlin.
makandra executed the platform’s relaunch and included an exercise calendar, a map, and a search function that covers all available exercise programs. This not only improves the user experience but also significantly simplifies data maintenance.

Key Challenges
The goal of the relaunch was to transition the existing application to a legally compliant and user-friendly production environment, while adhering to strict requirements.
- Strict Compliance Requirements
The platform had to be brought into compliance with the strict accessibility requirements (BITV 2.0), data protection guidelines (GDPR), and the corporate design of the State of Berlin. - Limited User-Friendliness
The existing UI/UX in the frontend and backend made it difficult for citizens to find services and for associations to maintain data. - Technical Modernization
To future-proof the system, existing technical debt had to be reduced and test coverage expanded. This required comprehensive upgrades to core dependencies, as well as the resolution of vulnerabilities and the adjustment of the CSP configuration.

makandra modernized the frontend and backend to improve usability for citizens and associations. Particular emphasis was placed on intuitively integrating search functions with visual presentation.
Interactive Map and Calendar
A key component of the relaunch was technically and visually improving the interactive calendar and its accompanying activity map.
To keep the entry barriers as low as possible for citizens, a new layout for the main elements was introduced. The search filters are now located directly next to the map, allowing users to see their selections in real time. This is complemented by the activity calendar, which displays events in a clearly structured format and makes the targeted search for sports activities in the Berlin metropolitan area significantly more intuitive.
Modern design in line with Berlin's standards
The relaunch was complemented by a UI/UX redesign. The design was revamped in strict accordance with the City of Berlin’s corporate identity to create a consistent and modern user experience. This visual redesign not only gives the platform a much more contemporary look, but also strengthens citizens’ confidence in the city’s accessible digital services.
